The place

Simple rooms in Les Chapieux, across the way from the refuge, and a quieter proposition than a dormitory full of people who have all just come down the same 900 m of descent. If you have been sleeping in bunkrooms since Les Houches, a door that closes is worth something.

The position is identical: the foot of the Vallée des Glaciers, with the same 8 km of valley to walk before the real climb to the Col de la Seigne begins. That valley walk is the gentlest hour of the western Tour — a road, then a track, cows, and the Aiguille des Glaciers growing steadily ahead of you. Use it to warm up rather than to hurry; the col itself takes 700 m out of you and it does not start until Les Mottets.
