On the lake shore in Champex, a few minutes from the shops and from the point where the two routes to Trient part company. A pension in the old sense: rooms, a dining room, and a proprietor who will tell you what the Fenêtre d'Arpette is doing today.
That last part is worth more than it sounds. Arpette is the one place on the Tour where the decision genuinely matters — the notch is a steep boulder field on both sides, and in a wet or early season it is a different proposition from the photographs. The Bovine route is not a consolation prize either: it climbs through forest to an alp at 1987 m with a long view down the Rhône valley to Martigny. Sleep well and decide in the morning, with the sky in front of you.
