The place

The village inn at Trient, across from the pink church. Half board, a drying room, and breakfast early enough to get you onto the Col de Balme before the day warms up.

The climb from here is 900 m and takes three hours or so, first through forest and then out onto open alp with the Aiguille du Tour above. There are two ways up — the direct path and the slightly gentler Les Herbagères variant — and they rejoin near the top. Neither is difficult; both are long. Carry water, because there is little on the way, and look behind you now and then: the view back to the Trient glacier is the best thing about the climb until the moment you reach the col.
