The place

A simple refuge and campsite at 1328 m just beyond Trient, at the exact point where the path leaves the road and starts up towards the Col de Balme. Basic, cheap, and precisely where you want to be at first light.

It is the least comfortable bed on this stretch and arguably the best placed. There is a mattress room rather than a proper dormitory, a shower block, and a meadow for tents. Walkers on a budget use it, and so do people who care more about a 5 a.m. start than about linen. Given that the Col de Balme in early morning is one of the two or three views the Tour is famous for, that trade is easy to defend.
