The place
Les Houches is where the Tour begins, and Michel Fagot sits in the middle of it — a few minutes from the bakery, the grocery and the Bellevue cable car, which matters more than it sounds when you are repacking at eleven at night and discover you have no breakfast. It is an ordinary village gîte, and that is exactly its virtue on the eve of a fortnight in the mountains.
What you notice next morning is how quickly the village ends. Within ten minutes the road becomes a path, within an hour you are at the Col de Voza with the Bionnassay glacier hanging above the tramway line, and the Tour has started in earnest. If you arrive off a late flight into Geneva, this is the sensible place to lose your first night rather than your first day.
