A quiet farmhouse refuge at 1505 m on the Bionnassay side, just after the Col de Voza and the tramway crossing.

The place

A working farm turned refuge at 1505 m on the Bionnassay flank, half an hour past the Col de Voza and the little rack railway that grinds up to the Nid d'Aigle. Almost nobody plans to sleep here, which is why it is worth knowing about: it exists for the walkers who landed late, started at four in the afternoon, and have no business trying to reach Les Contamines before dark.

Staying here turns a long first day into two short ones and puts the Bionnassay suspension bridge — the first proper alpine moment of the Tour — within an easy morning. The setting is pastoral rather than dramatic: hayfields, a barn, the sound of the tramway somewhere below. The drama is directly overhead, in the séracs of the glacier, and it is a good deal closer than it looks.
