The place

On the Val Ferret floor at 1642 m, directly below Rifugio Bonatti and the balcony path. A small hotel with real rooms and a restaurant, on the valley road that runs up from Courmayeur.

Its value is the bus stop outside. This is the standard escape from the Italian section: if the balcony traverse is out of the question — thunderstorm, snow on the Grand Col Ferret, a rolled ankle — you can be back in Courmayeur in half an hour. It is also a sensible night if you want to walk the valley rather than the balcony, which is flatter, shadier and about two hours quicker, though you trade away the Grandes Jorasses view that is the reason most people walk this side at all.
