It is a big FFCAM refuge and it feels like one: bunkrooms, a warden with a weather board, boots off at the door, and wind that does not stop. There is no shop, no phone signal and nothing above you but sky.

What you are paying for is the light. Sunset goes down over the Beaufortain in a long orange collapse; sunrise puts the Mont Blanc range in front of you before you have finished your coffee. It also sets up a superb day — either the standard descent to Les Chapieux, or the higher Col des Fours variant at 2665 m when it is clear of snow. It books out months ahead through the FFCAM, not through the Tour portal.
