At 2352 m beside the lake that carries the most photographed reflection in the Alps: the Aiguille Verte, the Droites, the Grandes Jorasses and Mont Blanc, all of them upside down in the water on a still morning. It is a short, steep climb off the balcony path and it is worth every metre.

The refuge is simple and the beds are few, and it books itself rather than through the Tour portal — reserve months ahead or not at all. If you cannot get in, go up anyway: the lake is an hour from the Flégère and the light in the late afternoon is nearly as good as at dawn. Snow lies at the lake into early summer, and the final section can hold it after everything below has cleared.
