A proper village at 1252 m with shops, restaurants, a train station and buses to Chamonix. About a kilometre below the trail — a short detour that buys you a supermarket and a pharmacy.

The place

A proper village at 1252 m: shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, a railway station and buses every twenty minutes into Chamonix. It sits about a kilometre below the trail, which is a short detour for what is, at this stage of the Tour, a considerable amount of civilisation.

Most walkers pass above it on the balcony without going down. Go down if you need to resupply properly, replace something that has broken, or eat a meal you choose yourself. The Grands Montets cable car is here too, and the glacier viewpoint at the top is one of the great short excursions in the Alps if you have a spare afternoon or the weather has stopped play on the balcony.
