The old wooden inn at Tré-le-Champ, right at the bottom of the ladders. Small, characterful, and the standard night before the Aiguilles Rouges balcony — one of the great days of the Tour.

The place

The old wooden inn at Tré-le-Champ, right at the bottom of the ladders — a rambling chalet with low ceilings, a garden, and more character than any other bed on the French side. It has been putting up walkers for a very long time and it looks it, in the good sense.

Staying here sets up what most people remember as the best day of the Tour: the ladders first thing, then the Aiguilles Rouges balcony past Tête aux Vents and the Lac Blanc turning, with the Drus, the Verte and the Mer de Glace directly across the valley all day. Book it early — it is small, it is beloved, and it sells through the Tour portal so the planner can tell you when it has space.
