The place
The Truc is a broad shelf of alpage at 1750 m, reached by the high variant that leaves the main path above Bionnassay and climbs instead of dropping into the valley. The auberge is a low stone building in the middle of the pasture, with tables outside, cows around them, and the Dômes de Miage filling the entire southern sky. People who take this variant tend to talk about it for the rest of the Tour.
It is a genuinely different first night from Les Contamines: no shops, no road, no phone signal to speak of, and dinner is whatever the family is cooking. The descent to the valley next morning is short and steep through forest, and you rejoin the crowd at Notre-Dame de la Gorge having seen something most of them did not. Book it — there are not many beds.
