The place

A hamlet at 1417 m where the Tour turns its back on the valley and climbs into the Aiguilles Rouges. A few houses in the trees, and above them the most talked-about piece of trail on the whole loop.

The ladders start twenty minutes above the hamlet: a series of steel rungs, rails and short vertical sections bolted up the slabs, well protected and not technically hard, but genuinely exposed and unpleasant if you dislike heights or the rock is wet. There is a signed alternative via the Col des Montets that avoids them entirely and costs about an hour. Nobody will know. Above the ladders the balcony traverse opens out and the rest of the day is pure reward.
