At the Pontet lake and campsite south of Les Contamines, right where the trail runs into the Montjoie valley. Handy if the village is full, and it trims a kilometre off the walk to Notre-Dame de la Gorge.

The place

At the Pontet lake and campsite, a kilometre or so south of Les Contamines on the way to Notre-Dame de la Gorge. There is a small lake, a lot of grass, and in July a good deal of family holiday going on around you, which is a strange and rather nice contrast to the mountain the trail is about to hand you.

Practically, it is the closest bed to the start of the Bonhomme climb, and useful when the village is booked out — which it often is, because everyone finishes day one here. The trail passes the door, so you can be walking within a minute of leaving. Notre-Dame de la Gorge, with its baroque chapel and the old Roman road climbing away behind it, is twenty minutes further on and makes a good first stop of the morning.
