The place
An hour above Notre-Dame de la Gorge, at the top of the cobbled Roman road that is the steepest thing the morning throws at you, Nant Borrant appears in a clearing of larch: a low stone farmhouse with tables outside and a stream running past. It is the last easy bed before the ground turns serious, and it is popular for the simple reason that it is lovely.
Most walkers stop here for coffee rather than a night, which is a pity — staying turns the Bonhomme day into something manageable and puts you on the col in the clear light of early morning. The food has a reputation. If you are running the Tour rather than walking it, note the time here and compare it with your plan; this is where people discover whether their schedule was optimistic.
