The place

A small gîte in Vallorcine on the valley route, with the Mont Buet — the Ladies' Mont Blanc, at 3096 m — closing the skyline to the north. Quiet, family-run, and a long way in feel from the Chamonix crowds twenty minutes down the railway.

Use it for a shorter day out of Trient, or as a rail-served entry point onto the Tour if you are walking only the French section. From here the trail can either climb to the Aiguillette des Posettes — a superb little ridge with the whole massif in front of it — or stay low through the Col des Montets nature reserve. In good weather the ridge is worth the extra 600 m without argument.
