A converted farm on the southern edge of Les Contamines, positioned exactly where the village stops and the trail towards Notre-Dame de la Gorge begins. That is worth a few hundred metres of tomorrow's climb, and it is quieter than sleeping in the middle of the village on a Saturday in August.
Everything Les Contamines offers is still a ten-minute walk away, so you lose nothing on resupply. What you gain is a start that does not involve threading through the village first thing, on the morning of what is, by most reckonings, the hardest day of the Tour: 1400 m of climbing over the Col du Bonhomme and the Croix. Being 500 m further down the valley when the alarm goes off is a small mercy, and small mercies add up on this trail.
