The place
The last village with everything, and the one most walkers reach at the end of day one. Supermarket, pharmacy, an outdoor shop that will sell you the poles you decided you didn't need, a bank, and buses down to Le Fayet and the Saint-Gervais railway. After here the Tour goes properly into the mountains and does not offer a real shop again until Courmayeur, four days on.
So treat it as a resupply stop, not just a bed. Buy the snacks, replace the blister plasters, and eat something that isn't half board. The village itself is long and low-slung along the Montjoie valley, more working than picturesque, with the Dômes de Miage closing the head of the valley behind it — a first glimpse of what the next few days are going to look like.
