The place

A small Swiss village at 1593 m in the Val Ferret, the first settlement after the border and the natural end of the hardest day on the Tour. A shop, a couple of restaurants, a campsite, and a post bus that runs down to Orsières and the Martigny railway.

It is a good place to take stock. The two big cols are done; ahead lies the gentler Swiss section and then the Aiguilles Rouges finale above Chamonix. If your schedule has slipped, the post bus and train make this one of the easiest places on the loop to shorten the Tour without drama. If it has not, tomorrow is a genuine rest for the legs: down the Drance through Praz-de-Fort, one of the best-preserved old villages in the Valais.
